The Story Behind It
A shovel, numerous bags, clay, sand, cement some barbwire and we were off building our earthbag domes. Credit for developing these amazing structures is Architect Nader Khalili from Cal Earth in California. www.calearth.org Earth bag domes provide a low cost, low impact housing which can be implemented all over the world. It offers protection from weather extremes, like fire and hurricanes and even with stand earth quakes. Our project started with a few permaculture students who thought it would be a good idea for Stellenhof.
We as owners agreed with this because we could use material generally found, or produced on our farm. Together with an enthusiastic team led by Andrew Mugford we finished our dream just before Christmas 2015. In the process we lost two inspiring people, Hazel Mugford and Hansie Flippies, without them our dream would not have started. Rest in peace, this is in loving memory of them.
Almost all the furniture and woodwork is done by the owner Bert Groenhof and made from wood grown and sustainably harvested on our own farm, Stellenhof. The headboards are also hand made by Gea Groenhof with the assistance of Wessel Kotze. The material used is plain linen which was coloured by tie dyed or batik methods. The surrounding permaculture garden was designed and completed by Andrew Mugford from Serenity Permaculture. Our main goal will be to feed our guests with produce from our own garden and farm.
